I always admired how Jesus quieted his opposition. Couldn’t help but want some of the same results.</p> <p>I’ll admit, occasionally, my desires are prideful but other times I earnestly desire that men and women would see that the Jesus I submit is legit. He really is messiah, He really is God and man. God really does exist and came down to save us. God really does love us but he will judge the wicked and there is a penalty for sin which is death and eternal condemnation. Again Jesus really came to save us from hell let’s not forget this. My issue is that I can’t always control my emotions and it is often my emotions that cloud sound reasoning from the scriptures about my position. There are things that I wish I could have said that make so much sense post conversation. Often I revisit opposing claims and in hind-sight there were arguments that scream, “Expose this!” So I’ve decided to blog about it. Better than reenacting the experience in the mirror. </p> <p>I spoke once with an atheist and indicated to him that he had a lot of faith to believe what he believed to which he responded, “not faith” and later “don’t insult me with a such a dirty word.” Wow, I wasn’t aware that faith was so offensive. Nonetheless he directed me to an article he wrote in 2007 where he described the difference between the use of “faith” in it’s secular use and sacred use. “Faith vs. Reasonable Belief.”  I expressed to him that there really is no difference, though I could see where he was coming from, I’ll explain a little later. His desire was to dismiss my claim that he was using faith to believe there is no God, based on his evidence, biased evidence might I add. He tried to push an annotated bible on me, one in which the author starts “I really don’t like the Bible.” Well that just ruins it, now I know you aren’t coming from a position of concern for me or my family.  </p> <p>My first scruple, how is an atheist, one who is unfamiliar with the concept of faith, eligible to define what faith is and what it is not? If my friend was consistent with his argument of credibility and evidence he would have to agree that he was not eligible to speak on the topic. Yet he spoke as if he had authority on the matter. But, then again it was an article and it did seem that he was seeking to understand how a Christian could connect an atheist’s view that God doesn’t exist with faith. I’ll let him slide. Again, the gist of his argument, atheist don’t use faith to surmise that God doesn’t exist, rather reasonable belief because their view is based on evidence and not on faith. According to him faith is and was not based on evidence but rather a blind conviction, “blind faith.” I openly disagreed stating that faith was in fact based on evidence and blind faith does not exist nor was/is ever encouraged in the bible.</p> <p>So here is where I really wished I had spent more time. I’ll give quote of the article as to not misrepresent.</p> <blockquote> <p>You have faith that the building you are in will not collapse, I will assert that it is not the same thing. This is faith based on reason and experience. There are thousands of similar buildings around that do not spontaneously collapse, and there is no reason to believe that this one differs in a crucial way from those. It has stood for a long time and shows no sign of structural damage. Architects have staked their reputations and livelihood on the safety margins, and engineers and construction workers staked their lives in working on it. In other words, there is plenty of <em>evidence</em> that the building won’t collapse. You can call this faith if you like; I call it reasonable belief and use the word faith to refer to belief <em>not</em> based on such tangible evidence. Like this definition or not, please keep it in mind as you read on.</p> </blockquote> <p>Now there does seem to be a distinction between putting faith in God vs. putting faith in a building. However I think the concept of faith is the same but differing in degree, similarly to how we love people or things. Faith in other words is trusting or believing it is the deepest degree of investment of one’s life into someone or something. What my friend is indicating is that faith doesn’t take in to account reason or evidence.  This is absolutely wrong. I explained that through a process of wooing and God consistently showing up in my life in such way that it could not be coincidence and the communication of God through his word (The Bible) on matters specifically pertaining to my life at that time gave me enough evidence to place my trust in. I’d heard about God from various people and began to develop somewhat of a theology, but it wasn’t until I saw God specifically communicating to me, through the bible and in response to prayer that I decided to put my faith/trust in him. I may not have articulated it like this in 2005 but looking back that is what it was. I argued that no Christian had ever put their faith in God apart from evidence to which he disagreed. That was to be expected. Unfortunately, as fallen men we are prone to think irrationally about God and men.</p> <p>So my point, what I wished I had said. In other words, there is plenty of <em>evidence</em> that the building won’t collapse.”</p> <p>So is this faith or not? Hmmm keep in mind I’m coming from the perspective that there is a God and that God has provided every man with a degree of faith. If we aren’t trusting in God we are trusting in something else for salvation, life, etc. I’m also arguing that faith is not without evidence. His reasonable belief or faith claim as I’ll call it can be placed here based on the evidence that architects have essentially invested themselves and their livelihoods into the safety of the building. Thus because of the effort and time and investment of life a person can trust that the building won’t fall.  My question, what about the countless hours the apostles spent sharing the Gospel, what about the millions of missionaries and prophets who have left home and family who have equally if not more greatly staked their lives on this Gospel; some of them died. Can I not put my faith in this God because of this? Even more, what about Jesus who with his blood paid the price for our entrance into heaven, specifically for those who believe this. What about his time spent?
